For both Saturday and Wednesday meets, swimmers are grouped by gender and age: 8-and-under; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; 15-18 for each stroke (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) and in most relay events. All swimmers are provided an opportunity to compete -- on Saturdays or Wednesdays, or sometimes both.
The League sponsors two levels of competition per week– Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings.
The Saturday morning meets are scored to determine team standings within the league.Participating swimmers are those with the fastest times in a particular stroke at that point in the season. However, the Coach may make changes to this policy in order to give the team what is believed to be the best competitive advantage for any particular swim meet.
For each of the individual events in a Saturday meet, as many as three swimmers per team compete. A swimmer is eligible to swim up to three individual events and two relays in any meet. Only those swimmers designated each week by the Coach will participate in the Saturday meets. Participants for Saturday meets are usually announced at Friday’s practice, posted on the bulletin board and emailed to the participating swimmers.
Attendance at Saturday meets by those not swimming is strongly encouraged. Attendance helps team spirit and earns points for your “swim school.”
The Wednesday evening “developmental” meets are not scored. These meets provide EVERY member of the team the chance to participate and compete with other swimmers of similar ability and to win ribbons for swimming accomplishments. There are as many heats as is necessary to allow ALL swimmers the opportunity to compete and to receive a ribbon.Note: if a swimmer has placed first, second, or third in any individual event in a Saturday meet, that swimmer is ineligible to compete in the following Wednesday meet in the stroke in which the swimmer placed.
